A train passing through the Saraighat Bridge in Guwahati on Thursday. The first train service on the rail cum road Saraighat Bridge across the Brahmaputra in Guwahati has completed its 50 years on Wednesday. The first train passed through the bridge on October 31, 1962, was a goods train. The construction of the Saraighat Bridge was completed on October 31, 1962. The total cost needed for the construction of the bridge was Rs 10 crore and 65 lakh at that time. The length of the bridge is 1.296 km. The Saraighat Bridge was inaugurated for rail and road traffic by the then Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru on June 7, 1963. The inaugural function was held at the Maligaon stadium in Guwahati. (Sentinel)
