Inter-College Youth Festival of DU to be held

Dibrugarh, Jan 20: The Inter-College Youth Festival of Dibrugarh University (DU) will kick off at DU campus on January 22.

According to Vice-Chancellor, Dr Kandarpa Kumar Deka,  the celebration committee has made all arrangements to make the 3-day youth festival a grand success.

Meghalaya governor, Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary and Resident Chief Executive of Oil India Limited, Duliajan, KK Nath will grace the inaugural function as chief guest and honoured guest respectively.

DIBRUGARH, Jan 20: Eco-tourism is a big business now-a-days but being so, it also puts to risk the main resource on which it thrives---Nature.

The Pangsau Pass Winter Festival 2013 aims at addressing this aspect, wherein conservation hand-in hand with tourism is encouraged. Held at Nampong in Arunachal Pradesh, it seeks to highlight the richness of the ‘Biodiversity Hotspot’ of the East Himalayas and the Indo-Burma region. The winter festival started in the year 2007 with the involvement of communities like  Tangsa, Khamti and Singpho, and today it has come to occupy a place in the itinenary of wildlife and nature enthusiasts.

GUWAHATI, Jan 18: The Assam State Election Commission on Friday announced the date of elections to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council.

The polls to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council will be held on April 30, 2013. Elections to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council will be held for the first time since the inception of the council 17 years ago.

Announcing the council poll schedule, State Election Commissioner Biren Dutta said that the process of elections to the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council would be a long affair due to the non-completion of delimitation of constituencies and publication of electoral rolls in regard to the Rabha Hasong area.

Nalbari Panchayat Elections


127 Nalbari polling stations very sensitive

NALBARI, Jan 16: The poll preparations, headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Nalbari as well as the District Election Officer, who is co-ordinating and supervising the preparations for the ensuing panchayat elections, is on full swing so that the polls could smoothly be held as per the schedule. The district election machinery is working in this connection.

The report available here added that the polling stations in the entire Nalbari district are classified as very sensitive (VS) and sensitive (S) which have been identified and necessary arrangements are being done to conduct the panchayat elections smoothly in those polling stations. Sources added that as many as  127 polling stations were identified as very sensitive while 234 among the total polling stations were identified as sensitive. Natun Dehar Uttar Dharmapur Zila Parishad has some sensitive polling stations which could pose security problems and 29 polling stations were identified as very sensitive in the Natun Dehar Uttar Dharmapur Zila Parishad.

According to the report, 20 polling stations are identified as sensitive in Daulasal Zila Parishad while 7 polling stations in Mukalmua Zila Parishad as sensitive and three polling stations are identified as very sensitive in the said Zila Parishad. Eighteen polling stations and 17 polling stations are identified as sensitive and very sensitive respectively in Bhangnamari Zila Parishad while 11 polling stations and 21 polling stations in Belsor Zila Parishad are identified as sensitive and very sensitive respectively. 36 polling stations and 5 polling stations in Chamata Zila Parishad are identified as sensitive and very sensitive while 20 polling stations and 25 polling stations in Pakowa Zila Parishad are identified as sensitive and very sensitive respectively.

According to the report, 41 polling stations and 29 polling stations in Uttar Dharmapur Natun Dehar Zila Parishad are identified as sensitive and very sensitive respectively while 34 polling stations and 15 polling stations in Tihu Zila Parishad are classified as sensitive and very sensitive polling stations. 24 polling stations in Barbhag Zila Parishad and 9 polling stations in Ghograpar Zila Parishad are identified as sensitive while 10 polling stations in Bahjani Zila Parishad are reportedly identified as sensitive.

The district election machinery and district police administration are doing full preparations to hold the election smoothly. But violent incidents might create chaos during the poll day if law and order is not tightened, the report said.

MANGALDAI, Jan 16: In an encounter with the staff of Orang National Park (ONP), a poacher of a 3-4 member gang  has been killed inside the Park on the midnight of January 14 while the other poachers managed to escape. As reported, the encounter took place near Ramkong anti-poaching camp of the park. Later on the next wee hours, the staff of the Park recovered the dead body of an unidentified poacher along with a gun, several rounds of cartridges, some dry eatables from his possession

CBI arrests ABMSU president for instigating BTAD violence

KOKRAJHAR, Jan 8: In a new twist to the BTAD riots, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Tuesday arrested the President of All Bodoland Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) Moinul Hoque from Joypur under Kokrajhar police station. Two other persons have also been arrested along with him at around 12.30 pm today. The other two persons have been identified as Jahanuddin Sheikh and Jakir Ali of Joypur area.

DIBRUGARH, Jan 8: The nomination papers of 54 candidates contesting for the posts of Zila Parishad member in the first phase of election in the district were found valid. However, one person withdrew his nomination. Meanwhile, one contestant for Anchalik Panchayats withdrew nomination papers even after being found valid. Now, 178 persons will contest for the same. 1,095 contestants will vie for the posts of gaon panchayat president after the withdrawal of a candidate. Five out of 1,700 candidates, who filed nomination papers to fight for the posts of gaon panchayat ward members and whose papers were found valid, took back their papers.
