ACKHSA on Silchar-Lumding gauge conversion project & compensation to the people of Dima Hasao

ACKHSA on Silchar-Lumding gauge conversion project & compensation to the people of Dima Hasao

ACKHSA urges Centre for immediate rehabilitation of affected people

SILCHAR, August 4: All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students’ Association (ACKHSA) expressed its concern at the negligent attitude of the Union Railway Ministry in granting compensation to the people of Dima Hasao whose land and property was acquired by the NF Railway for the uni–gauge conversion project.

In a memorandum addressed to Mallikarjun Kharge, Union Minister of Railways, the students’ body said that the inordinate delay in clearing the payment of compensation for rehabilitation of the affected people who were rendered landless and homeless owing to land acquisition speaks of the Centre’s “apathetic policy” towards the Northeast. Even the Government of Assam is also callous in mitigating the agonies and suffering of the people as is evident from its intriguing silence in the matter.

Asit Debroy, President, ACKHSA said that the lands and properties of the inhabitants of Dima Hasao were acquired by the NF Railway with the assurance of proper rehabilitation. But, the affected people surprisingly were not compensated till now.

“We have been given to understand that the people under the banner of ‘Affected People Rehabilitation Committee’ led by its president Prabin Langthasa are demanding speedy grant of compensation to about 245 families cutting across 14 villages of Dima Hasao district.”

He pointed out that due to lackadaisical attitude of the government, the affected people of the area are reeling under deep frustration. ACKHSA requested the authority concerned to take proper step to address the issue in the larger interest of common people. A copy of the memorandum was also sent to the General Manager, NF Railway, Maligaon, Guwahati for necessary action. The memorandum was signed by among others Biswajit Deb, vice president, Subroto Das, general secretary, etc.
