Assam D’ voters issue now before the Supreme Court

D’ voters issue at citizens’ meet

SILCHAR, August 6: Though the issue of ‘D’ voters is now before the Apex Court of India, it continues to haunt the civil society. A discussion on this most emotive and sensitive issue is slated at the citizens’ meet convened jointly by Sundari Mohan Seva Bhawan and Srikona Club on August 11 at Gandhi Bhawan. It will be divided into two sessions. The first part will be sieged with deliberations and discussions and the second part with specific resolutions to arrive at definite conclusion.

Dr Kumar Kanti Das, one of the convenors, said the ‘D’ voter issue has become a matter of serious concern as it has been affecting people in the three districts of Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi along with all other parts of Assam. Till date, many persons belonging to lower class families in particular have been served with notices to prove their bonafide as Indian citizens. In many cases, even without notices, police has been involved in a sort of ‘witch–hunting’, branding Indian citizens as Bangladeshis and even sending them to detention camps for push back. It has been the consensus that notwithstanding the Writ Petition on the issue before the Supreme Court, a movement in a coordinated manner involving all sections of people has to be chalked out and launched in order to pressure the Centre and the State for a reasonable and permanent solution. All the citizens of this town and beyond have been invited to take part in the deliberations and offer their valued suggestions as well as opinions.
